Version 1.0 · Last updated 2 October 2026
The short version
- Maalin is an iPhone app that helps you plan your day around sleep, food, water, movement, prayer, habits and spending, and suggests what to do next.
- You must be 18 or over.
- Maalin gives general wellbeing guidance. It isn’t medical advice and it isn’t a religious ruling. Prayer times are calculations. Your local mosque or religious authority has the final word.
- It isn’t for emergencies. If you think you’re in danger, call your local emergency number.
- Your data is yours. It’s encrypted on your phone before it’s synced, and we can’t read it.
- Keep your passkey and your recovery kit safe. If you lose both, we can’t get your data back.
- Maalin is free today. If we add a paid plan, we’ll tell you first, and safety features, restore and export stay free.
- The law where you live may give you rights these Terms can’t take away.
The full Terms follow. They’re what counts.
1. Who we are
Maalin is made by Maalin Technologies Ltd (“Maalin”, “we”, “us”), a company being registered in England and Wales (its company number and registered office will be added here once registration completes), with its head office in Nairobi, Kenya.
In these Terms, “Maalin” also means the app, the website at maalin.app and the servers that keep your account and your encrypted data. “You” means the person using Maalin.
2. Agreeing to these Terms
These Terms are also Maalin’s licence agreement on the App Store (section 11), so they apply from when you download Maalin, including before you sign in. You confirm your agreement when you create your Maalin account. On the step “Create a passkey”, the line above the button says:
By tapping Create a passkey, you agree to the Terms of use and confirm you’ve read the Privacy Policy and Consumer Health Data Policy.
If you don’t agree, don’t create an account, and don’t use Maalin.
The same step has a separate box you tick yourself. It asks you to agree that Maalin keeps your health and faith data encrypted on its servers in the EU. That consent isn’t part of these Terms. It’s explained in the Privacy Policy and the Consumer Health Data Policy. Maalin needs it to keep your data safe for you, so you withdraw it by deleting your account (section 6.8).
Signing in to an account you already have doesn’t show this step again. The Terms you agreed to keep applying, as changed under section 13.
3. Who can use Maalin
- You must be 18 or over. Maalin asks your age band first. If you’re under 18, it stops and stores nothing.
- You must be able to make a binding agreement where you live.
- You may use Maalin only for yourself. It isn’t for tracking another person, and it isn’t built for businesses, clinics or employers to use on other people.
If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 18, we may close it and delete its data.
4. What Maalin does
Maalin looks at your day and suggests the next thing to do. It uses what you log, what you let it read from Apple Health and your calendar, and the settings you choose. It has:
- Today: a suggested next action, with its reason; your day at a glance; a morning brief and an evening wrap-up.
- Log: a quick way to record meals, water, activities, check-ins, habits, prayers, payments and notes, by tapping, typing, speaking or taking a photo.
- History and Insights: what happened, and how your week is going.
- Modules you switch on: Food, Water, Activity, Prayer, Habits and Spending.
- Schedule: day types, protected times and fasting windows.
- Your account: sign-in, a passkey, a recovery kit, encrypted sync between your iPhones, export and deletion.
Maalin works on your iPhone. Most of what it does happens on the phone, and some features need a connection. Features change over time (section 13). Some features described in our documents are planned for later versions and may never arrive.
Maalin doesn’t provide content such as recipes, workout videos, religious texts or audio, or articles. It isn’t a diagnosis tool, a medication manager, a period tracker or a blood-sugar manager. It isn’t a bank or a budgeting service.
5. What Maalin isn’t: health, safety and faith
Please read this section carefully. It matters for your safety.
5.1 General wellbeing guidance, not medical advice
Maalin gives general wellbeing guidance. It isn’t medical advice, and it isn’t a medical device. It doesn’t diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any illness. It doesn’t replace a doctor, nurse, dietitian or other health professional.
- Suggestions come from fixed rules applied to your own data. They’re general, not written by a professional for you.
- Maalin has safety rules. For example, it doesn’t suggest hard activity when you haven’t eaten for a long time, and it doesn’t set calorie targets below a minimum unless you tell it a professional set that target with you. These rules lower some risks. They can’t cover every person or every situation.
- After some readings or reports, such as very high blood pressure or chest pain, Maalin may suggest you see a doctor. It doesn’t mean you’re ill. If Maalin doesn’t suggest it, that doesn’t mean you’re well.
- Readiness (“Go”, “Go easy”, “Rest”) is an estimate from your own sleep and heart data compared with your usual. It isn’t a medical measure.
- Always follow the advice of your own health professional over anything Maalin suggests. Don’t delay getting care, or ignore a professional’s advice, because of something in Maalin.
In the app, About and legal says this in one line: “General wellbeing guidance, not medical advice.”
5.2 Emergencies
Maalin isn’t for emergencies. It doesn’t watch you, alert anyone or call for help.
If you think you or someone else has a medical emergency, call your local emergency number or go to the nearest hospital now. If you’re thinking about harming yourself, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line where you live.
5.3 Talk to a professional first
Ask a doctor or other qualified professional before you use Maalin’s suggestions on food, fasting, weight or exercise if any of these apply to you:
- You’re pregnant, or breastfeeding. You can tell Maalin in your safety profile. It then stops suggesting calorie cuts, fasting and hard activity, and gives general guidance only. It still isn’t a pregnancy app.
- You have, or have had, an eating disorder, or food, weight or calorie numbers are hard for you. You can switch off Food, targets and weight at any time.
- You have a medical condition, such as diabetes, heart disease, high or low blood pressure, kidney disease or a condition that affects eating, drinking or exercise.
- You take medicine that is affected by food, water, fasting or activity.
- You’re recovering from an illness, an injury or an operation.
Stop any activity and get help if you feel chest pain, faintness, dizziness, severe breathlessness or anything else that worries you.
5.4 Fasting
Maalin respects the fasts you choose to keep, whether for faith or for health. It plans meals, water and activity around the fasting windows you set.
- You set each fast and confirm its dates. Maalin doesn’t decide when a fast starts or ends, or whether you should fast.
- Fasting isn’t safe for everyone. Many faith traditions excuse people who are ill, pregnant, breastfeeding, travelling or elderly. If you have a medical condition or take medicine, ask your doctor, and, for a religious fast, a scholar or leader you trust.
- If you feel dizzy, faint, confused or unwell while fasting, stop and get help. Maalin may remind you that illness is a widely recognised reason not to fast. That reminder isn’t a religious ruling.
5.5 Prayer times and religious dates
Prayer times in Maalin are calculations. Maalin works them out on your iPhone from your city or location and the calculation method you choose. Dates in the Hijri and other calendars are also calculated.
- Different methods, and local moon sighting, can give different times and dates. A time can also be wrong if your city, location or time zone is wrong.
- Maalin isn’t a religious authority and gives no religious rulings. For prayer times, the start and end of Ramadan and other fasts, and any question of practice, follow your local mosque or the religious authority you trust.
- Maalin’s reminders help you keep what matters to you. It never marks a prayer as missed, and it doesn’t judge.
5.6 Estimates, AI and data from other sources
- Estimates can be wrong. When Maalin reads a meal from a photo, a sentence you said or text you typed, it estimates the food, the portion and the nutrition. Check the result before you save it. Maalin always shows an estimate for you to confirm, marked “Estimated”.
- AI. Maalin uses AI on your iPhone to turn photos, speech and text into logs, and to put its numbers into short sentences. AI doesn’t decide what Maalin suggests. You can turn it off in Privacy and data. The Privacy Policy explains how we use AI, in “How we use AI”.
- Food values come from food composition tables and recipes. They’re averages. The food on your plate can differ.
- Data from devices and other apps reaches Maalin through Apple Health. We don’t control how accurate it is.
- What you enter. Maalin’s suggestions are only as good as the information it has. Keep your profile, targets and safety profile up to date.
5.7 Weather
Maalin shows weather from Apple Weather and uses it as one input when it suggests outdoor activities.
YOUR USE OF THIS REAL TIME WEATHER GUIDANCE APPLICATION OR WEBSITE IS AT YOUR SOLE RISK. WEATHER DATA MAY NOT BE ACCURATE.
Weather in Maalin isn’t for emergencies or for protecting life or property. For warnings about dangerous weather, follow your local authorities.
5.8 Checkups you set (planned for version 1.0)
If you add a checkup, such as a dental visit every 6 months, Maalin reminds you when it’s due. You choose the checkup and how often. Maalin doesn’t tell you which checkups you need, how often to have them, or what a result means.
5.9 Spending
Maalin records what you tell it you spent, so you can see what meals and places cost. It isn’t financial advice, a budgeting service or a bank. It doesn’t connect to your bank or move money, and it doesn’t convert currencies.
5.10 Reminders and notifications
Reminders can arrive late or not at all. For example, iOS Focus, Low Power Mode, your settings or a flat battery can stop them. Don’t rely on Maalin for anything where a missed reminder could harm you, such as taking medicine.
5.11 Routes and location
If you record an activity with its route, the map is for your own record. Don’t use Maalin to find your way.
6. Your account
6.1 Signing in
You need an account to use Maalin. You sign in with Apple, with Google, or with a one-time link sent to your email. Then you create a passkey. There are no passwords.
Give us a working email address, or use Apple’s Hide My Email. We send security notices to it.
You can also add a phone number to get sign-in codes, security alerts, reminders or news on WhatsApp. These messages are optional and are covered by the Privacy Policy.
You can add more ways to sign in under You → Account and sync. We never merge two accounts, even if their emails match.
6.2 Your passkey and your recovery kit
Your data is encrypted on your iPhone with a key only you hold. Your passkey, and your recovery kit, are what let a new iPhone open your data.
- Your recovery kit is a code Maalin shows you once. Keep it on paper or in a password manager, not in iCloud Drive. The Privacy Policy explains why.
- If your passkey can’t protect your data, you’ll need the recovery kit on every new iPhone. Maalin tells you when this applies.
- You’re responsible for keeping your passkey, your recovery kit and your devices safe. Use a passcode on your iPhone. Don’t share your recovery kit.
6.3 If you lose access
- We can’t open your data for you. We don’t have your key. Nobody at Maalin can reset it, read your data or get it back.
- If you lose your passkey and your recovery kit, your data can’t be recovered.
- You can then reset your login to an empty account. The reset happens after 7 days. We announce it on each of your devices and by email. Until then, you can stop it from a device that’s still signed in, or by unlocking with a passkey or the recovery kit.
- If you didn’t ask for a reset or a deletion, stop it straight away and contact us (section 18).
6.4 Your devices
You can see your devices under You → Account and sync, and remove any of them. If a device is lost or stolen, remove it and mark it that way. Maalin then changes your key. We tell your other devices and your email when a device is added.
6.5 Signing out
Signing out removes your data and keys from that iPhone. Anything that hasn’t synced yet is lost. Maalin warns you first. The encrypted copy stays with your account.
6.6 Before you sign in
If you use Maalin before you’ve signed in, for example without a connection, your data stays only on that iPhone until you sign in. If the phone is lost or reset before then, that data is gone.
6.7 Export
You can export all your data, as JSON and CSV files, at any time, in Privacy and data. Export is free and will stay free.
6.8 Deleting your account
You can delete your account in the app, under You → Account and sync. You confirm with your passkey. If you can’t, deletion happens after a 7-day wait that we announce on your devices and by email, and you can stop it until then.
When your account is deleted:
- Your keys are deleted at once, so nothing left on our live servers can be opened.
- Your records are deleted from our live servers at once, and from our backups within 30 days.
- We revoke Maalin’s access to your Sign in with Apple. If you used Google, we tell you how to remove Maalin from your Google account.
- Deletion can’t be undone. Export your data first if you want to keep it.
The Privacy Policy explains what we keep, for how long, and why.
7. Using Maalin fairly
Use Maalin only in ways the law allows and these Terms permit. Don’t:
- use someone else’s account, or let someone else use yours
- break, test or get around Maalin’s security or encryption, except through a responsible disclosure to company@maalin.app, with the subject “Security”
- copy, change, decompile or reverse-engineer the app, except where the law lets you
- overload, disrupt or attack our servers, or use bots or scripts to access them
- use Maalin to store or send anything unlawful, or anything that infringes someone else’s rights
- use Maalin to track, watch or collect data about another person without their permission
- resell Maalin, or build a competing service from it
- use Maalin, or data taken from it, to train AI models, or to scrape it in bulk
- use Maalin in a way that breaks the terms of Apple, Google or another service it relies on
If you break these rules, we may act under section 14.
8. Your data and content
8.1 It’s yours
What you log, write, photograph and set in Maalin is yours. These Terms don’t give us ownership of it.
8.2 What we can and can’t see
Your records are encrypted on your iPhone before they’re synced. We store them locked and can’t read them.
We can see what we need to run your account: how you sign in (for example your email or Apple’s relay address), your devices and security events. We also count how Maalin is used without knowing who you are. You can turn that off in Privacy and data.
The Privacy Policy says what we collect, why, where it’s stored, who processes it and for how long, and how to use your rights. The Consumer Health Data Policy covers your health data under US state laws. Both are part of what you read before signing up. If these Terms and either policy seem to differ about your data, the policy applies.
8.3 What you let us do with it
You give us permission to store, copy, send, back up and delete your encrypted data, and to process your account data, only to run Maalin for you and keep it secure. This permission is worldwide, because your iPhones can be anywhere, and free of charge. It ends when your data is deleted from our servers and backups, except where the law requires us to keep something.
We never sell your data or use it for ads. We share it with another company only when you turn on a feature that needs it, and we name the company first.
8.4 Your ideas
If you send us ideas or feedback, we may use them to improve Maalin, without owing you anything. We won’t name you without your permission.
9. Other companies’ services
Maalin relies on services run by other companies. Their own terms and privacy policies apply to your use of them. We don’t control them, and we aren’t responsible for them.
- Apple: the App Store, Sign in with Apple, passkeys in iCloud Keychain, the Health app, Apple Intelligence on your iPhone, and notifications.
- Apple Health: Maalin reads only what you allow and saves what you log to Health if you allow it. You control this in the Health app. Once data is in Health, other apps you allow can read it, under their own terms.
- Apple Weather: weather data comes from Apple Weather. Its data sources are listed at the link next to the Apple Weather mark in the app.
- Google: if you sign in with Google, Google’s terms and privacy policy apply to that sign-in.
- Devices and apps that write to Health, such as watches, rings and scales.
- Open-source software and data in Maalin come with their own licences. They’re listed in About and legal → Licences.
10. Our rights
10.1 Your licence to use the app
We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the Maalin app on Apple-branded devices you own or control, for your own use, under these Terms and Apple’s Usage Rules (section 11).
10.2 What we own
Maalin, including the app, its design, text, illustrations, rules and software, belongs to Maalin Technologies Ltd or the people who license it to us. The name “Maalin” and its logo are ours. You may not use them without our written permission.
10.3 Trademarks
Apple, the Apple logo, iPhone and Apple Watch are trademarks of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries and regions. App Store is a service mark of Apple Inc. Google and the Google logo are trademarks of Google LLC.
11. App Store terms
You get Maalin from Apple’s App Store. This section applies to that, and it wins if anything else in these Terms conflicts with it.
- Agreement: these Terms are between you and Maalin Technologies Ltd only, not Apple. We, not Apple, are solely responsible for Maalin and its content. These Terms don’t give you usage rules that conflict with the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions.
- Licence: your licence (section 10.1) lets you use Maalin on Apple-branded products you own or control, as the Usage Rules in the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions allow. Other accounts linked to yours through Family Sharing or volume purchasing may also use it where those rules allow.
- Maintenance and support: we alone are responsible for maintaining and supporting Maalin (section 18). Apple has no obligation to provide any maintenance or support for it.
- Warranty: we alone are responsible for any warranty that the law gives you and that isn’t effectively excluded. If Maalin fails to meet such a warranty, you may tell Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price, if you paid one. As far as the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation for Maalin. Any other claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs or expenses from a failure to meet a warranty are our responsibility.
- Product claims: we, not Apple, are responsible for any claim by you or anyone else about Maalin or your having or using it. This includes claims that it causes harm as a product, that it fails to meet a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims under consumer protection, privacy or similar laws, including claims about its use of HealthKit.
- Intellectual property: if someone claims that Maalin, or your having or using it, infringes their intellectual property rights, we, not Apple, are solely responsible for investigating, defending, settling and discharging that claim.
- Legal compliance: you confirm that you aren’t in a country under a U.S. Government embargo or one the U.S. Government has designated as “terrorist supporting”, and that you aren’t on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- Contact: questions, complaints and claims about Maalin go to us (section 18).
- Third-party terms: you must follow the terms of any other service you use with Maalin, such as your mobile or internet provider’s.
- Third-party beneficiary: Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms. When you accept these Terms, Apple has the right, and is treated as having accepted the right, to enforce them against you as a third-party beneficiary.
12. Price and Maalin Plus
Maalin is free today. We don’t show ads.
We may later offer a paid plan, Maalin Plus, with extra features. If we do:
- We’ll tell you before anything that’s free today becomes part of Maalin Plus.
- Safety features, restoring your data on a new iPhone, and export stay free for ever.
- You’ll buy Maalin Plus through Apple’s in-app purchase. Apple takes the payment, charges any tax and handles refunds, under Apple’s terms.
- Before you pay, the app shows the price, how long each period lasts, that it renews automatically until you cancel, and how to cancel.
- You can cancel at any time in your Apple account’s subscription settings. Cancelling stops the next renewal. You keep Plus until the end of the period you paid for.
13. Changes
13.1 Changes to Maalin
We improve Maalin and sometimes change or remove features. If we remove a feature you rely on, we’ll try to tell you first. We’ll always keep a way to export your data.
13.2 Changes to these Terms
We may change these Terms, for example when Maalin changes or the law does.
- For a change that matters to you, we’ll tell you in the app or by email at least 30 days before it applies, unless the law or a safety or security reason requires a faster change. We’ll say what’s changing.
- If you don’t agree to a change, you can export your data and delete your account before it applies.
- Each version has a number and a date. Maalin records which version you agreed to, and when. Earlier versions stay public at maalin.app/legal/history.
14. Ending your use of Maalin
14.1 You can leave at any time
Delete your account (section 6.8). You don’t need to give a reason.
14.2 When we may suspend or close an account
We may suspend or close your account if:
- you seriously or repeatedly break these Terms
- we must, to comply with the law or an order from a court or authority
- your use puts other people, Maalin or its security at risk
We never close or delete an account because it hasn’t been used.
Unless the law, or a safety or security reason, stops us, we’ll tell you first, say why, and give you time to export your data and to respond. Export works on your iPhone, so you keep that choice even after sign-in stops.
14.3 If Maalin closes
If we stop running Maalin, we’ll tell you at least 90 days before, so you can export your data. Then we delete what’s on our servers.
14.4 What continues
Sections 8.4, 10.2, 10.3, 11, 15, 16 and 17 continue after your account ends, as far as they’re relevant.
15. Our responsibility to you
15.1 Your rights under the law
Nothing in these Terms takes away rights you have under the law of the country where you live that an agreement can’t change. If you’re a consumer in the European Union or the United Kingdom, you have legal rights if Maalin isn’t as described, doesn’t work as it should, or isn’t fit for its purpose. These Terms don’t affect those rights.
15.2 What we promise, and what we can’t
We build Maalin with care and test it before each release. We’ll provide it with reasonable skill and care.
As far as the law allows:
- Maalin is provided “as is” and “as available”. We can’t promise it will always work, be free of errors, or be available at any particular time or place.
- We don’t promise that suggestions, estimates, prayer times, weather or food values are accurate, complete or right for you (section 5).
- We aren’t responsible for services run by other companies (section 9).
15.3 Limits on our liability
As far as the law allows:
- We aren’t liable for loss or damage that wasn’t reasonably foreseeable when you started using Maalin, or that you could have avoided by following these Terms (for example by keeping your recovery kit safe).
- We aren’t liable for loss of profit, business or opportunity. Maalin is for personal use.
- We aren’t liable for data you lose because you lost your passkey and recovery kit, signed out before your data synced, or deleted it yourself. We can’t recover encrypted data without your key.
- Our total liability to you for all claims about Maalin is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim and USD 50.
These limits never apply to liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else the law doesn’t allow us to limit.
15.4 Your responsibility
If you break these Terms and someone brings a claim against us because of it, you’re responsible for the loss that causes us, as far as the law allows.
16. Law and disputes
16.1 Talk to us first
If something’s wrong, contact us (section 18). Most problems can be fixed quickly. We’ll reply within 14 days and try to resolve it within 30 days.
16.2 Which law applies
These Terms are governed by the law of England and Wales.
If you’re a consumer, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live. Our choice of law doesn’t take that protection away.
16.3 Where to bring a claim
You may bring a claim about these Terms in the courts of England and Wales. If you’re a consumer, you may also bring a claim in the courts of the country where you live, and we can bring a claim against you only there.
You can also complain to the consumer or data protection authority in your country.
17. General
- The whole agreement: these Terms, with the Privacy Policy and the Consumer Health Data Policy, are the whole agreement between you and us about Maalin.
- Languages: these Terms are published in English and Somali. If the two versions differ, the English version applies.
- If a part is invalid: if a court finds part of these Terms can’t be enforced, the rest still applies.
- Not enforcing a right straight away doesn’t mean we give it up.
- Transfer: you can’t transfer your account or these Terms to anyone else. We may transfer these Terms to another company if Maalin is sold or reorganised, if your rights aren’t reduced. We’ll tell you if that happens.
- Events outside our control: we aren’t responsible for delays or failures caused by events we couldn’t reasonably control, such as a power or network failure, a natural disaster or an action by a government.
- No one else has rights under these Terms, except Apple as section 11 says.
18. Contact us
- Email: company@maalin.app, for support, questions, privacy and your data. Put “Data request” in the subject for a request about your data.
- Security problems: company@maalin.app, with the subject “Security”.
- Where we are: Maalin Technologies Ltd, Nairobi, Kenya. Please write to company@maalin.app; we publish a postal address once our UK registered office exists
