Languages and regions

Built for your language and region.

Maalin doesn't assume your language, your calendar, your weekend or your money. Your region sets the starting point, and you change anything. At launch, Maalin speaks English and Somali.

Choose Maalin's language inside the app, on the first screen or later in Region and language. It doesn't depend on your phone's language, because iPhone doesn't offer Somali as a system language.

Somali, written for Somali readers:

  • Every Somali line is written from Maalin's own glossary and checked by a native speaker, in context, before release. No word-for-word machine translation.
  • Dates read the way Somali readers write them, "Arbaco, 23 Sebtembar", with 24-hour times.
  • Written for readers across Somalia, Djibouti, Ethiopia's Somali region, Kenya and the diaspora.
  • In Somali you type your logs; voice logging is English for now.
  • Notifications and security notices arrive in the language you chose in Maalin.

Built for more: right-to-left layouts are tested in Arabic before every release, although Arabic comes later.

Your region sets the start. You set the rest.

  • Units: metric, US or UK, with a choice per measure. In the UK, Maalin starts with ml, kg, cm and miles.
  • Currencies: several at once, with exact amounts.
  • Week start and weekend: from your region; pick any days.
  • Calendars: Gregorian, Hijri (Umm al-Qura or civil) or Ethiopian, with an optional second date line.
  • Hijri date adjustment: move Hijri dates from 2 days back to 2 days ahead, to match your local moon sighting. Suggested Ramadan dates move with it, and you confirm them.
  • Activities: the list starts with what's common where you live.
  • Food: where two tables have the same food, search shows the one for your region first.

Money where you live

  • Mobile-money names ready in your payment list: EVC Plus, Zaad, Sahal and e-Dahab in Somalia; M-Pesa in Kenya. Elsewhere: cash, card and "mobile money". Add, rename or hide any.
  • Names only: no logos, no account links, no balances.

Set up for Somalia.

  • US dollar first and Somali shilling second, because day-to-day prices are in dollars.
  • A Thursday and Friday weekend to start with, and you can pick any other.
  • Prayer times by Muslim World League with Shafiʿi Asr, checked against mosque timetables in Mogadishu and Hargeisa before release.
  • Cities in every region of Somalia, listed under Somalia, as in iPhone's own country list.
  • Somali dishes in the food library, with their Somali names.

Where Maalin is available

  • Every App Store country and region except mainland China.
  • In a few countries, account sync waits for a local approval; Maalin still works fully on your phone there.
